Ghana's Female Hockey Team 'BLACK STICKS' Off to Commonwealth Games

The Black Sticks boss named his final squad on Saturday morning hours after playing Exchequers hockey club in a friendly at the Theodosia Okoh hockey stadium.


Ghana will for the first time participate in hockey  at the Commonwealth games to be held in Gold Coast,  Australia. Ghana's female hockey team will open their account with a game against New Zealand on Friday 6th April, 2018. 
They will then play defending champions Australia the next day.  Scotland is next on Monday, 9th April before they finally lock horns with Canada on Wednesday, April 11th.

The team booked a place to the games after finishing second behind African giants South Africa in the Africa Hockey Championship. This also puts them in contention for the World Cup games later on in the year. 

Ghana’s female Hockey team coach Emmanuel Ahadjie arrived at his final team after a friendly game on Saturday. The Black Sticks played their last friendly game With Exchequers at the T.  Okoh hockey stadium.  The team is  dominated by players of GRA Royal ladies and Police Ladies.

The squad includes 2017 ACCC best player Mavis Berko and top scorer Nafisatu.

Players like Skipper Racheal Bamfo, Fiador Evelyn and goalkeeper Abigail Boye failed to make the cut. 

The squad in full: 
Goalkeepers : Bridget Azumah (unattached) and Mavis Ampem Darkoa (Reformers).
Defenders : Juwaila Acquah (Ghana Police), Janet Adampa Oforiwaa (GRA), Mavis Berko Boatemaa (GRA), Adizatu Suleymana (GRA), Emelia Fosuaa (GRA), Benedicta Adobea Adjei (Reformers).
Midfielders : Nafisatu Umaru (Ghana Police), Lydia Afriyie (GRA), Serwaa Boakye (Ghana Police), Ernestina Coffie (GRA), Cecelia Amoako (Ghana Police).
Attackers : Vivian Narkuor (GRA), Elizabeth Opoku (GRA), Martha Sarfoa (Ghana Police), Roberta Sarfo Owusu (GRA), Deborah Whyte (GRA).

The Ghana female hockey team is currently ranked 2nd in Africa.  South Africa remains number one. 

The team departs to Australia for a pre-tournament camping.
